Story Behind The Song
It's about the way everything happens everywhere all at once among all the people. After 9/11, the chorus makes uncanny sense: 'On an ordinary Day, Maybe we all fall down at once...' We are more likely to be united in tragedy than joy. Although the song isn't about 9/11, it is about the idea that we're all connected.

Ordinary Day
Now and then a heart will break,
Everybody makes the same mistakes
Over again, we never really learn.
Live long enough you come to find,
You see yourself coming from the other side
Around again, the carousel goes by.
So long to the Bushman
In his Kalahari grave,
So much for the cannonball
No castles we can save,
Too late for the buffalo
No home of the brave -
Still it makes it hard to carry
On an ordinary day,
Maybe we all fall down at once.
Ah we're happy and we're safe,
Even though we're headed for
The kingdom come.
High above the atmosphere,
See my future crystal clear
In outer space, the lunatic alone.
Your god is gone, your kids have grown,
Your generation sits upon the mantlepiece,
It's lonely and it's cold.
Haven't you been sorry
For the things you've never been?
Wouldn't you give anything
To do them all again?
The boulevard is crowded
With the broken and the weak -
Still it makes it hard to carry
On an ordinary day,
Maybe we all fall down at once.
Ah we're happy and we're safe,
Even though we're headed for
The kingdom come.
