Story Behind The Song

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Dust on the dashboard
Red clay on my boots
Sun beatin' down on a two-lane
And a tired pair of roots
Pulled into that crossroads bar
Just to rest these bones
Found a bottle from the lowland
Tasted like coming home
[Chorus]
Southern Comfort on my tongue
Takes me back where I'm from
Front porch swing and a slow sad song
Mama hummin' soft
Daddy singin' along
I been worn out
I been strung
But I still feel young
With Southern Comfort on my tongue
[Verse 2]
Talked to an old timer
Nursing his quiet ache
Said
"Son
This world'll bend you
More than it'll ever break"
We clinked glasses in the half-light
Shared a laugh
Shared the blame
Every little burning swallow
Spelled out my name
[Chorus]
Southern Comfort on my tongue
Takes me back where I'm from
Fireflies floatin' over fresh-cut yard
Old hound dog dreamin' by the rusted car
I been lost
I been on the run
Sleeping under strange suns
But Southern Comfort on my tongue
[Bridge]
[Guitar leans into a slow
Bending line]
It ain't money
It ain't gold
It's stories in the throat
It's Friday night on a gravel road
And every word we never spoke
(oh, sing it low now)
[Chorus]
Southern Comfort on my tongue
Takes me back where I'm from
Hand-me-down faith and a potluck prayer
Faded blue jeans and kitchen chair
I been bitter
I been numb
Too tired to overcome
But Southern Comfort on my tongue
Yeah
Southern Comfort on my tongue
