Unintended World

Story Behind The Song

My friend and Professor of Philosophy Russ Manion collaborated with me on the lyrics for this song. Though Russ wasn't satisfied with the final results, I must give him credit for the concept and title of this song. While there are serious problems of logic for people who believe in an unintended world, this song attempts to dramatize the practical and emotional problems that stem from this world view. All of us accept one view or the other: an intended world or an unintended world. The latter is not only self-refuting, it is utterly unsatisfying to most people - as it should be.

Unintended World
© 2009 Russ Manion & Jeff McCain

He was only five when his mother died
His sadness turned to anger 'cuz he thought it wasn't right.

At the age of ten horror struck again
And he began to wonder if he should be surprised.

Then a friendly soul helped him see the light:
"It's all a game of chance, no purpose, plan or point'.

He cried and cried all day but then he took the pill.
It tasted oh so bitter but it caused the storm to still.

Living in an unintended world.

She was seventeen when they made her queen
Another crown of glory in a chain of happy years.

As fate shined on her path, her dreams all came to pass
And she began to question was it just as vain as tears?

Then a friendly soul helped her clear her mind:
"It's all a draw of luck, no reason, point or rhyme".

She cried and cried all night but then she took the pill.
It tasted oh so bitter but it seemed to stem the guilt.

Living in an unintended world.

In time they had a son, they taught him right from wrong.
And he began to ponder what those words could even mean.

They loved him oh so much, but love they said was luck
He couldn't bare the thought that it was just a fruitless game.

Then a hopeful thought caused his heart to stir:
"There's purpose in our lives, there's meaning to the world."

He laughed for joy and then he threw away the pill.
A cure that is so bitter that he'd rather remain ill.

Living in an intended world.
