A Work In Progress
Words and Music by Jeffrey Wayne Churchwell
© 2003 Hat's Too Tight Music (ASCAP)

(verse 1)
How arrogant we must look.
How terrified we must be,
To point the finger elsewhere
When there?s trouble all around for us to see.
With shuttered hearts and windows
We turn our gaze inwardly,
Reciting, in our blindness,
?We are right, and they are wrong, for we are free!?

(chorus 1)
Free to cast our blame and anger when the system starts to fail.
Ever mindful of the flooding, we demand that others bail.
Is our purchase truly solid atop Evolution?s scale?

(verse 2)
Closed-minded and closed-hearted,
Closed to ev?ry possibility.
?It isn?t in that Book I read;
It can?t be heard, it can?t be said; it?s not for me.?
It?s back to where we started,
Back when the fruit was pulled from the tree.
I know you know, so don?t get sore,
It?s just another metaphor,
Not history.

(chorus 2 )
Still, the histories we?ve written lead us far beyond the pale.
We recall with such precision every wrong and each travail.
Is there hope we'll reach a balance on the debit-credit scale?

All that we believe,
All that we have fought and bled and died for,
So expensively achieved.
We ourselves deceive,
Trading all we?ve learned for bridges burned,
And hearts to wear upon our sleeves.

(verse 3)
So what?s our contribution?
What do we bring to the Mystery?
A virtue?s made of ignorance,
While empathy and common sense are lost at sea.
What hope of resolution,
When no two of us can agree?
Two roads diverged in woods, and I
Implored of fellow passers-by,
?Won?t you blaze this trail for me??

(chorus 3)
We can see the path we?re walking is as slippery as shale.
You can hear it in our talking; some are frightened; some are frail.
Is our fear a higher mountain than we ever thought to scale?
