Spoken For

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song about my early working career when I was fixated on moving up the corporate ladder. It was a time when financial success was my number one goal. Family and faith were number two and three on my priority list. Then I found faith in the Lord and my "to-do" list was completely turned upside-down. I drew a line in the sand with work and made faith and family number one and two. My faith began to grow by leaps and bounds almost over-night. My family life greatly improved and I found myself more effective in the work place. The understanding that there is much more to life than financial success gave me an entirely new perspective. It was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I remember being in corporate meetings and feeling completely at peace. I felt no need to "jockey" for position. I was confident in the understanding that I don't need to please man because there is One who is infinitely more important to satisfy. I have been a completely different person ever since. Sure, I sometimes fall short, but I am covered by His grace and don't need to pretend to be someone I am not.

Lyrics

I got this "to do" list
It's a half mile long
And my phone keeps ringing
As it plays that silly song
I got a hundred emails
That all need a reply
And papers on the desk
Piled way up to the sky
I push away the coffee
As my hands begin to shake
I shut the door and dim the lights
And close my eyes to pray
Now I'm spoken for
All my time is Yours
There's not a call ahead of You
You're the one I'm talking to
Now I'm spoken for
You won't be ignored
I let go of this weight
And my worry falls away
Now my heart is restored
I'm with You I'm spoken for
It's five and I'm headed home
Like a thousand times before
But I can't remember driving
When I arrive at the door
So I stand for a moment
To find some energy
For my kids who come runnin'
When they hear daddy's keys
Lyin' in bed exhausted
Another hard day
I can't feel your presence
So I close my eyes and pray
I woke up this morning
Work plans filled my head
My Bible hit the floor
As I bumped out of bed
"Seek first the kingdom"
Stared up at me
And this part-time Christian
Began to read
It was that moment
My life turned around
You took my "to do" list and You
Turned it upside-down
Now I'm spoken for
All my time is Yours
There's not a call ahead of You
You're the one I'm talking to
Now I'm spoken for
And You won't be ignored
I let go of this weight
And my worry falls away
Now I'm spoken for
All my time is Yours
I invited You inside
No more pushing You aside
Now I'm spoken for
My life is with You Lord
My priorities have changed
My life's been rearranged
Things are different than before
With what the future has in store
Your love has opened up the door
I'm with You I'm spoken for
