Sand In His Shoes
Words and Music by Jay Pounders

He woke up in the VA all alone
And the nurses got his family on the phone
And his Mama said Son, we?re awfully proud of you
He said Ma, I just did what I had to do
He?s still wearing those red, white, and blues
People stare and they know he paid his dues
And he still has sand in his shoes
The doctor said he could learn to walk again
As he looked down where once his legs had been
And his Honey said she??ll be there in three days
He said Honey, I don?t want you to see me this way
He?s still wearing those red, white, and blues
People stare and they know he paid his dues
And he still has sand in his shoes
Can?t stop thinking about the ones he left behind
He?s still sinking in that desert in his mind
Though he?s home now there?s no peace he can find
He?s still wearing those red, white, and blues
People stare and Lord he?s paid his dues
He?s still fighting a war he did not choose
And he still has sand in his shoes
