The Subtle Art Of Falling

Story Behind The Song

The singer - a woman, even though it's my voice on the demo - is considering two different phases in her relationship with her husband: one, when they first met as teens; second, the present day. In the first instance, even though all the signs were there, she wasn't sure that he actually loved her. She would ask herself "When will he fall in to this love?". In the second instance, years of marriage have dulled his interest in her, and yet she still clings to the *idea* of them being in love. Again she asks herself "When will he fall in to this love?" Finally, after years of supressing her rage, humiliation and despair, it erupts. She puts words to her feelings, telling him she won't continue with the farce, and insisting that it ends. A song about the communication.

Lyrics

The Subtle Art Of Falling
(Jason Paris)

Verse 1
When I look back across my life
I remember one man
Silent yet strong, in his way,
So in command.

Pre-Chorus
Two nervous teens
We'd talk for hours and hours
When hours turned to weeks,
There was one thing I had to know.......

Chorus 1
When will he fall
Into this love?
Why isn't all that I've given enough?
When will he step
Out of my dreams
Bringing my life all the things that it needs?

Can I be sure
Of him at all?
When will he fall?

Verse 2
Now as I walk around this home
Everything seems so old
Pictures we framed so long ago
Leaving me cold.

Pre-Chorus
I watch him as he comes now in to the hall
A clutch of papers in his hand
The empty glance that holds no feeling at all
It sees right through me now,
As though his soul is made of stone.
I have to turn away,
His eyes now chill me to the bone.

Repeat Chorus 1

Bridge
Is this the man I've known since that first day?
As I look at him now......
This house is filled with words I cannot say.

Chorus 3
This can't go on,
Our moment is past
I want you to know that I free you at last.
I'm finally sure
And your face says it all....
Let it all fall.

Oh, let it all fall!

Have I ever been sure
Of you at all?
Why did I fall?
