Do You Know What It's Like?

Story Behind The Song

Heavily influenced from Journey's "Raised On Radio" album and Third Eye Blind's "Blue" album, this song is the first exploring my lower vocal registers.

Song Description

This song describes my demo CD submission process and hundreds of rejections from radio station program directors, labels, magazine reviwers, many of whom just tossed my stuff into the trash. For them it's 10 seconds of "bother, for me it's my life. This song is my anger at the callousness of these people, and asks how they sleep at night doing what they do, and if they know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of this treatment.

Lyrics

You never believed me,
You never want to turn around and see the light,
You've never conceded,
If only you would see my side for just a time,

Ooh my thoughts are out of line,
Still I try to realize that I'll be fine,
And you aren't the only one,
That I'm calling,

Though I'm living in a world of backstreets,
I shouldn't ever have to be a lie in it,
But I'll never justify to be in line,

But I just want to know what it's like,
To have a soul and to sleep at night when you decide a life,
Tell me do you know what it's like,
To be the one who's got to be denied, who's got to find the time,
For the rest of a life,

Now they're calling for names,
And oh you know you're blinded by the chance to feel alive,
Oh, how the time it flies,
And then you start to see the price for what's decided,
My moment it's fading, its fading,

I've fallen in love with a last dream,
If you could only ever realize it,
You're never gonna try and see the light,

But I just want to know what it's like,
To have a soul and to sleep at night when you decide a life,
Tell me do you know what it's like,
To be the one who's got to be denied, who's got to find the time,
For the rest of a life,

Though I'm living in a world of backstreets,
I shouldn't ever have to be a lie in it,
All I want is just to know if you,

But I just want to know what it's like,
To have a soul and to sleep at night when you decide a life,
Tell me do you know what it's like,
To be the one who's got to be denied, who's got to find the time,
For the rest of a life,

But I just want to know what it's like,
To have a soul and to sleep at night when you decide a life,
Tell me do you know what it's like,
To be the one who's got to be denied, who's got to find the time,
For the rest of a life,

Well I've seen the light,
And I know the line,
But I can't believe it,
There's just no reason,
For this reason,
What it's like,
There's no reason,
But I'll be fine,
I guess I'll be fine,
