Lyrics

Evil Eye
Greenberg/Harpeth Rising

As I go around from town to town, you know I dodge the evil eye
A broken man with hat in hand, I can't find no place to hide
From the clueless politicians and the crooked grinning cop
Strung out on pure authority, won't someone make them stop?
The mystery is melting now, it's all becoming clear
I can't go on and I can't turn back and there's no place for me here

Yonder howling patriot, you know his tune quite well
One by one, he sends your sons but he does not go himself
And the Minister of Truth declares that no one's gettin' paid
Cooperation, infestation, and then we all disintegrate
Am I all alone here, standing in this hall?
Who among us know can read the writing on the wall?

The priest from pulpit hatred strikes the broken bells of sin
There's one who knows, it's been foretold, but you don't speak for him
And Noah takes the slaughter knife and Lot just slams the door
And Goliath and Golgotha feast, King Judas shouts for more
Down along the roadside the fool tries to divine
If the world has turned invisible or if he's just gone blind

The painters brush is rusted and the horn can hold no fruit
The poet has gone missing and the builders hands are mute
The atoms smashed and the lightning flashed across the universe
Now darkness waits outside the gates, collecting on a curse
Here among the refugees wherever we do meet
Each man now doth hold his tongue but the time will come to speak

And there behind the iron gates they boogie through the night
Each according to his place observes who's left and who is right
Congratulations, proclamations, blessed are the wealthy
Anyone can claim the truth but the winner writes the story
Plow shares have been stolen and soon the choir will sing
And somewhere in the distance I can hear the hammers ring
