Song Description

A pulsating rock song with quirky Beck guitar licks and odd harmonic background vocals singing "lie lie lie lie lie", rocking drums by Gregg Williams, a funky, percolating, bubbling drum loop and soulful female duet vocals representing a schizo state of denial whether it's infatuation or love. The high-pitched male lead vocal, a la Daryl Hall, adds blue-eyed soul and emotion to the never-ending struggle determining how much control we have over our feelings.

Story Behind the Song

For the umpteenth time I was infatuated with the wrong person and wrote a song decrying the notion that there's a delineation between love and lust/infatuation and whether it all matters because we often seem victims of uncontrollable feelings. (For what it's worth, writing the song called attention to the issue and I haven't repeated the pattern).

Lyrics

lie lie lie lie lie lie lie

Do you think you're satisfied
do you think he's on your side
do you tell yourself the lie
"I'm in love"

How much will you sacrifice
you should let him take your life
any price is not too high to be in love

I can't see the writing on the wall
my cruel heart will never make the call

When you look into his eyes
what you see is no disguise
go ahead and compromise 'cuz
"I'm in love"

You've succumbed 11 times
searching for a life of rhymes
and justifying all your crimes
sounds like love

Golden senses and butterflies in white
everything that's wrong taking over right

Everybody wants to feel alive
(love, love, I'm in love)
if I can pull myself away then I'll be surprised
(love, love, I'm not in love)
it's life and death so disregard my advice
you can court the devil in a suit once or twice
you got as much control
as when you're rolling the dice
oh, no, I'm not in love

I'm in love
love, love, love, love, love
I'm not in love

I can't see the writing on the wall
my cruel heart can never make the call

Oh, everybody wants to feel alive
but there's a thrill that comes
without the burning inside
if I can pull myself away then I'll be surprised
this is all I know
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa

it's life and death so disregard my advice
you can court the devil in a suit once or twice
you got as much control
as when you're rolling the dice
oh, no, oh I'm not in love

love, love, love
everybody wants to feel alive
love, love, love, love
do you tell yourself the lie
I'm not in love

Do you think you're satisfied
do you think he's on your side
anything to pay the price
I'm in love

Do you tell yourself the lie
everybody wants to be in love
Do you think you're satisfied
Do you tell yourself the lie
I'm in love

Everybody wants to be in love
Do you think you're satisfied
do you think he's on your side
do you tell yourself the lie
lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie

everybody wants to feel alive

love, love, love
I know it's hard to see the writing
splattered on the wall
