Story Behind The Song
A few years ago I was partners with a (female) singer who liked to do jazz/swing standards. I thought we might take the "medium swing" feel into the 21st century by keeping the same basic tempo but having the drums play in a half-time feel, hopefully adding some funk and hipness to the sound. "You Gotta Know" was written and produced with this concept in mind.
Song Description
A song for Steely Dan, if they would ever just cheer the hell up. A nice re-visit of the "I'll always be there for you" sentiment.

Lyrics
You Gotta Know
you gotta know
that tides may turn and winds may blow
you gotta know
that no matter what I love you so
and if you feel like crying
the rainy day Daily News
I will be your funny paper
laughing away your blues
you gotta know
that no matter what I love you so
you gotta know
you gotta know
when times get tough and you?re feeling down
I will be the one
who picks you up and sticks around
and if you should be running
holes in both your shoes
I will be the soul you need
to see you through it
win or lose
you gotta know
that no matter what I love you so
you gotta know
not just a bed of roses,
life closes in sometimes?
thick or thin, I?ll be there
with a wing and a prayer
just for you
you gotta know
that mountains come and mountains go
but forever will be
your special place inside of me baby
and if the ?worst? should happen
well how bad could it be?
?cause if you and I believe in Us
like magic, we are home
home free
you gotta know
that no matter what
I love you so
you gotta know?
