Story Behind The Song
This song came to me one day after having lived in New York City for a few weeks recording my first album, in mid-summer 1980. I came to love New York, and wound up staying there a number of years.
Song Description
Sonically, "Gotta Get Out..." sounds like the Billy Joel track "All For Layna", in fact it was inspired by it. Lotsa piano with a cool bass line and some Andy Summers-style guitar.

Lyrics
Gotta Get Outta Here
gotta get outta here
before I break from
the weight of the world on my back
better get outta here
before they know
that I?m gone from this city attack
gotta get outta here?
rushin? the town at ten o?clock
out on the street
around the block, alone
just a piece of the company
stifling on this wave of sin
I can?t help but smell
the dog-daze in the air
like a Jersey refinery
gotta get outta here
before I break from
the weight of the world on my back
better get outta here
before they know
that I?m gone from this city attack
gotta get outta here?
tracing the day-prints in the tar
caught in the too-familiar war between
?is it the Jets and the Sharks again?
ah, lover?s relief
a friendly face
away from this suicidal place
a touch of a hand I don?t have to bite?
gotta get outta here?
I live between the front lines
a runner in a land of mines
gotta get outta here
before I break from
the weight of the world on my back
better get outta here
before they know
that I?m gone from this city attack
gotta get outta here?
