Familiar Disaster

Story Behind The Song

The song tells the story of a character's experience with something bad- something that hurts them- that they continue to entertain, over and over. Thus, the title: Familiar Disaster. As the story develops, the character loses patience, which fully erupts in the bridge, but then the character is drawn back in for the final chorus, which starts the cycle of dysfunction over again.

Song Description

The song opens with just voice and distorted rhythm guitar. Drums soon join the mix, closely followed by the full texture of a standard rock band. From there, the energy and tension increase, rising higher and higher. The bridge pulls back to a thinner texture, though the lyrics and vocals bite harder than before, giving the section a sort of breathless fury. The song then returns to the chorus, embellished with some new melodic material, before ending on a full but unresolved harmony.

Lyrics

Familiar Disaster | You're glowing in the dark | It's really not that hard | I want you | Skyscraper Heartbreaker | We both know that I would leap | The secrets never keep | Don't you know me?

Here's asking you to make it worth it | When the deal is made | And I can't sleep | You know we'll never learn it | It's something in our blood that runs too deep

Don't ask me what I'm doing | I'll tell you when I can | It's all part of the plan | And I can't risk lying

So Tortured Horizon | Swear not to think too hard | This is way too avant-garde | I'm leaving | Oh but he's charming, disarming | His eyes never at rest | With his arms across his chest | He's watching

He's watching to be sure it's worth it | When the sun goes down | He knows he won't sleep | He says that we can learn | And it's something that I just | I must believe

Don't ask me what I'm doing | I said I'll tell you when I can | It's all part of the plan | And I can't risk lying | Don't ask me what I'm thinking | Cuz my thoughts are not of you | Well that's not completely true | But I'm trying | I'm trying

Familiar Disaster | My accident in plaster | My vision when there's | Nothing left to see

If the gods are all demented | Then the triumph's represented | In your gasoline tears that | I don't need

Well if it's not for sale then I want it | And I'll drag you into the gauntlet | And I'll help you lose yourself | And then lose me

So sing just a little louder | Cuz your voice is my gunpowder | To send me back to the place | I've got to be

Familiar Disaster | Familiar Disaster | Just one more time for old time's sake | Then we're free

Don't ask me what I'm doing | Oh I'll tell you when I know | There's nothing here to show | And I won't | I won't lie | Don't ask me what I'm thinking | My thoughts are not of you | But you know that that's not true | But I'm trying | I'm trying
