That Kinda Man

Story Behind The Song

I was trying out for American Idol a second year in a row. After having made it on the show in it's second season (and acting like an idiot) I promised family and friends, (and myself) that I would try out the next year. After failing in my attempt in Atlanta, I drove up the coast to New York to try out again. Broken car, no money got in line, and got kicked out for drinking a beer. destitute, I went and busked at Times square to make enough money to get out of Manhattan. I wrote this song as I sat at a truck stop, somewhat defeated, and the idea popped into my head that I could still make it to the Hawaii auditions. :-) I decided not to go, but it brought to my mind the ridiculousness of my actions and I tried to find the humor in the situation.

Song Description

This song is more about not knowing when to quit. "When I strike out, I keep swing that bat!" It's a facetious look at determination and striving for some goal, not realizing that it might be out of reach, or that the opportunity has passed. But hell, we're musicians. This is what we have to do.

Lyrics

Sometimes you've gotta call it quits
Gotta fold you cards, gotta cash in your chips
You've gotta step down, let somebody else in,
Shut your mouth and just stop moving the wind.

Sometime it's best to turn your cheek,
Come to grips with reality and head off to hit the street.
But I couldn't tell you very much about that
Cause when I strike out, I keep on swinging that bat

I say uh come on, come on, give me just one more chance
Come on Zizi give me just another dance,
I could win your heart if you only let me in
And I ain't gonna quit until I say when
And uh I'm gonna take every breath that I can
Saying why do I do that--because I'm that kinda man.

Now uh, any time I'm ever in a fight,
I pull my can out and I never think twice,
You see my daddy told me not to mess around
So I make sure that I hit 'em where it counts.
You see I, swing left, I duck right,
I kick between their legs to knock out their daylight,
But if I miss or slip and I get laid out flat,
You better best believe that I'll be yellin for a rematch

Singing
(Chorus)=+why do I do that because I'm that kinda man

yeah now, do it, do it come on and get down to it
if you wanna win you better take a stand,
and if it is what you want you better get it
Cause everyone's gonna trample over you if you never decide to make up your demands.

(Chorus)+ Why do I do that, because I'm that kinda man
Why do I do that, because I'm that kinda man
