Song Description

Maybe a song that was sung to help slaves flee north too freedom. It is suppose to come from history.

Story Behind the Song

I am planning a cd that has as many elements in the life of America..people, places, war all in song and I hope to cover a lot of ground. so this is my choice for our Afican-Americn brother had thought to do "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" but this won out.

I have heard tunes about "The Drinking Gourd"...i am well versed in the Underground Railroad...this is well done.

    - Lonnie G

Here's a great cover of a Negro spiritual and I'll bet my thumb pick that the artist is Ms. Delta. She specializes in this kind of rendition and they're always a great listen. The instrumentation had depth and nicely complemented her wonderful vocals.

Lyrics

Chorus.... Follow the drinking gourd -follow the drinking gourd
The old man is waiting for to carrie you to freedom..Follow the drinking gourd.

When the sun comes back and the first quail calls... follow the the drinking gourd, for the old man is waiting for to carrier you to freedom, follow the drinking gourd

Riverbed makes a mighty fine road, the dead trees will show you the way,
left foot peg foot traveling on...follow the drinking gourd.

Chorus

The river ends between two hills...follow the drinking gourd, There's another river on the other side....follow the drinking gourd

Chorus
