Song Description

Cora Jones was a widow of the Civil war and lived with her small son on Bluestone Mountain....There their life was short lived when tragedy struck and both mother and son were lost in the caves of West Virginia.

Story Behind the Song

I first heard this song in a cafe on a friday nite and loved the melody but could't understand the words. So I asked and was told the name was "Bluestone Mountain." I so fell in love with the story I felt I needed to record my own version.

I like the beautiful piano sounds and the drums as well - very beautiful vocals as well.

    - Randal Dunkle

interesting instrumentation kept me listening. lead vocal pleasant mostly on key. the ambient nature of the mix is pleasant, but maybe a bit "unfolk" like if that's the genre you are after IMO. the backing vocal is pleasant as well. really like the piano where we could hear it.

    - Warren Hein
Lyrics

If you wander through the hills of West Virginia
down to where the greenbriar winds
turn your ear toward Bluestone Mountain
an you just might hear the sound of a young girl
cryin'

chorus:
Some say it's the wind through the canyon
as it blows a lonesome sound through the pines
some say it's the sound of the river
but I say it's just Cora Jones a' cryin'

Cora lived alone on Bluestone Mountain
a little blond-haired boy there by her side
the bloody civil war made her a widow
an little Jacob was her life-blood and her pride

CHORUS:
Hummming.....and I say it's just Cora Jones a'cryn'

Sometimes I wonder if God watches
and sometimes life can turn in cruel ways
'cause on a cold autumn day in late October
little Jacob wandered in Scott Hollow Cave

Now the caves of West Virginia run forever
like a maze of black ribbon through the ground
Cora went to search for little Jacob
but neither Jake nor Cora would be found

CHOURS:

So, if wander through the hills of West Virginia
down to where the greenbriar winds
turn your ear toward Bluestone Mountain
you just might hear the sound of a young girl
cryin' oooooo-crying oooooo-crying
