Song DescriptionA young woman sits in under a tree in the Midwest and watches the wind comb through its branches, thinking about the relationship between freedom and stability, between branches and roots.
Story Behind the SongOne of the first songs that Julian Marshall and I co-wrote as Eye to Eye, in the late 1970s. I was a reformed wild child hippie whose commune had called it quits; my parents had fetched me from the snowy Rocky Mountains and enrolled me in college. It's a song about the sensitive process of surrendering to reality--not necessarily giving up on dreams, but more like a wake up call for when it's time to trust your gut, cut your losses, keep the faith and start again.
