Song Description

This is one child's version of the truth, using her Mom's loving and wise, often-repeated sayings to justify her actions and hopefully sway her Mom to believe that she didn't do anything wrong.

Story Behind the Song

This song was inspired by motherhood in this case, but not by my sons, who never never never deigned to behave in such a way. On a higher plane it speaks volumes about the need not only to be honest and truthful in what you say, but honest and truthful in what you do. I think that the listener most likely won't involve themselves in the higher philosophical moralities of this song. It's much more fun just to sit back and enjoy.

Lyrics

He took my crayons and my bicycle, too.
He said I didn't play fair. That's not true.
And then he hit me, hit me hard on my arm
And then I kicked him so he'd know how it feels.
He started crying and he ran home to tell his Mom.
So I thought you'd want to know what happened
'Cause I'm telling the truth..... telling the truth.

Mom, you told me that you never, never, never
Borrow things without asking.
So when he whispered "could he ride my bike?"
(Could he ride my bike!!)
I told him "only if you ask a little louder."
He said "read my lips" and he jumped up on my bike
And started ped'ling away....... very fast.
Well, then I pushed him just a tiny, tiny bit to help him go
And he fell over... Over!
My bike's O.K.

I know you'd rather have me walk away instead of fight
So I took out my crayons.
I know that he's my friend and friends should always share
Even though he makes me mad.
So when he asked if he could color with me I said "Sure.
You can use my black one. Black is a very nice color."
He said "THAT'S NOT FAIR!!!"

--- Bridge ---

He took my crayons and he broke them in two.
He said "now here's some for me and for you."
That's when I hit him..... and he hit me, too.
And then I kicked him so he'd know how it feels.
And now he's crying and he ran home to tell his Mom.
So I thought you'd want to know what happened
'Cause I'm telling the truth..... telling the truth. The Truth!
