Song Description

My Grandparents where always on the river. Although they did not have an easy life, Grandma always had a zest for life, a song in her heart, and loved to dance.

Story Behind the Song

When my Mom called and told me what Grandma did before she died, I just knew there was a song. My Grandparents owned & operated the New Richmond Ohio river Ferry boat before they built the bridge up river of Cincinnati. When they retired they took the cabin cruiser that my grandfather built with his own hands down the Ohio river through the Mississippi and they made it to where they lived in Merritt Island Coco beach Fl.Until after he died & she could no longer care for herself. She was a pistol with a belly laugh that resonated. When she was young, she was a can can dancer. When I was a kid, You could just start a couple lines to a song she knew,& she would stop whatever she was doing and break into song & dance. No matter what mood she was in at the time. Visiting them was a real treat. She was a great cook (Ham with pineapple slices smells sooo good). I wrote this song on scrap paper (driving with my knee) from Pa. to Ohio and read it at her eulogy. There was not a dry eye in the place.

Songs about loved ones will never go out of style. You did a great job of showing and not telling on this song. Very descriptive. Nicely written.

What a tribute....I think we can all relate. Lyrics are terrific and really set a nice scene...I can almost smell the cooking'....Love the simple hair/stairs rhyme...how perfect was that?

Lyrics

GRANDMA'S STAIRS
Just hours before my Grandma passed; she sat up straight in her bed.
Her mind had been slipping for the past few years but I'll never forget what she said.
She looked up kind of startled and said lord how am I ever gonna climb all those stairs
I wrote this little song for her, and it's called Grandmas stairs.
(Heaven can hardly wait)

Grandma was a worker, but she loved to sing & dance.

Grandpa was a good man, (we know who wore the pants.)

He spent his life time building, or working on a boat.

She did her best, without much rest, to keep their dreams afloat.

[With 7 hungry mouths something's always cooking on the stove

But you could still always hear her singing & watch her dosie doe. ]

When my Grandpa died & left, we still lived on the farm.

To help my Grandma up the stairs, I'd lend her my arm.

I still smell ham & the pineapples, how her laughter filled the air.

I hear her sing & see her dance, her spirit's everywhere.

[With 7 hungry mouths something's always cookin on the stove,
But you could still always hear her sing & watch her dosie doe.

(When he sees her silver hair)
Well I know my Grandpa's gonna smile, when he see's her silver hair.

& I know that he'll lend her an arm, to help her up those stairs.

For she's on her way to heaven now, & we should tip our hat's,

cause Grandma's been "gone" way to long,

& Grandpa wants her back.

[With 7 hungry mouths something's always cookin on the stove,
But you could still always hear her singing & watch her dosie doe. ]

Now don't cry because Grandma's gone, she's right where she belongs.

She's singing past those golden stairs,... dancing in, my Grandpas arms.
[Chorus]
(She's walkin past the pearly gates)
