You Don't Ask (But I Want To Tell You)

Story Behind The Song

Infatuation caught me by the heel, though I was committed to someone else. After a dream affected me heavily, I remedied the infatuation by writing a song. It helped, believe it or not, to break the power of infatuation and to simply accept that I was fond for someone. It happens to all love affairs, I would imagine, and must be dealt with somehow and not ignored. I dealt with my infatuation by songwriting--and that girl has the song to listen to in order to hear what I was feeling...in her CD player he he he. (She doesn't know it--another idea for a song hmmm.)

Song Description

The subtext of what goes on between people can be very rich song fodder-especially when what goes unsaid is represented by actions: opening a door, and small gift, the offer of services. Sometimes it is not right for two peope to express their fondness for each other--the the expression gets forced into the nonverbal. Such is the tour of this song--and expression of fondness, and the working out of guilt by way of acts of warmth, kindness, protection, etc.

Lyrics

verse 1:
you don't ask but i want to tell you
cards and flowers that i want to send you
love addressed with your name that will never reach your box
your ears are right here
like wishing wells waiting for a penny

verse 2:
you don't ask but i want to heal you
be the one who comes to your rescue
cast the curse away that came with your father's heirloom
dirt and spit couldn't get rid of it
and when you pressed your feet against the water's edge
your toes just passed through

chorus:
you don't ask but i want to tell
you don't search, now honey, but i want to lead you
to teach you

and all the hopes you've been concealing since your youth
they're stuck inside you
you've been alone
and the hour the came and went when you know you were the one
you could not move on

and how, how i believed in you
its myself i've been trying to save just trying to save you

verse 3:
you don't ask but i want to shield you
be the roof that protects you
you were safe behind the glass
the world outside a playground
but when the thief arrived
you let him in just like a brother

(chorus)
