Don't Say I'm Not Your Daughter

Story Behind The Song

One night while drunk, my father reviewed the books on my bookshelf, finding them to be cheesy and useless philosophical garbage. He said my interests made him believe we were nothing alike: "you couldn't possibly be my daughter. I think you're mother was fooling around." He doesn't remember saying it, as usual. It made me not want to be his daughter, but also made me want to prove myself worthy in his eyes.

Song Description

This song serves as a way for a daughter to confront her father, his abuse, his alcoholism, when in real life, she feels incapable of doing so. At the same time, she recognizes her love for him and their personality similarities, and hopes to find mutual emotional ground for them to meet.

Lyrics

A daughter of a drunkard turned hydropot
A water-drinker wary of lemon
I could be a casual sipper but I?m not
I?m too afraid of letting vice in

But I?m addicted to avoiding you
Not any better than a holy roller
I didn?t know separating your deeds from my beliefs
Would make me just another high-strung teetotaler

Chorus:
So go ahead and tell me I?m as dry as a Texas summer
Tell me I?m as stiff as your mother?s margarita
Tell me I?m as brave as a child in a corner
But don?t say I?m not your daughter
No don?t say I?m not your daughter

I?m as sober as a judge when I listen to you
But I can?t help but prepossess bias
And I don?t know Gawd any more than you do
But don?t claim to have faith in a defiance

I sit and observe your weakness
A regular voyeur of destruction
It?s the way that you explain yourself to death
that gives me ammunition for this condescension

Repeat chorus

Bridge 1:
Rummy, glutton, sickling sot, suckling pig
Funny how you let it out but it comes back in
Luna, loca, laughing, tuna fish
A beautiful mermaid lost in your own Atlantis

Bridge 2:
At least you love something?. (repeat x3)
So why am I always trying to be Pythagoras?

Daddy you?re in my home, in my living room
That?s my stereo, my remote control
Do what you want with the rib of your drowning ship
But don?t put your anchor down in my ocean.

Repeat chorus

Daddy don?t you say that I am
Don?t you say that I am not like you in some ways, no
Daddy don?t you say that I am
Don?t you say that I am
Don?t you say that I am not your daughter.
