Baptizin Party on Caney Creek

Story Behind The Song

Song was written based on an artist spec for a fun gospel old-style tune. That very night I crossed the Caney Fork river 5 times on the way back from Nashville. Lyrically the song started to write itself

Lyrics

BAPTIZIN' PARTY ON CANEY CREEK ©

Let me tell you a story bout' Caney Creek
Way back in the foothills of Tennessee
Where the water runs cool and the water runs clean
Where it ain't too shallow and it ain't too deep

Parson Potter brought his church to town
They threw up a tent and then they pegged it down
Up from the hollers and down from the hills
Folks came a runnin' for their gospel thrill
The night air was hot but the sermons were hotter
My cousin wasn't saved so we ran home and got her
The Holy Ghost shook sinners out of their seat
Then they headed up the aisle and down to Caney Creek

We had a baptizin party on Caney Creek
Where it ain' t too shallow and it ain't too deep
Now, so many souls got saved this week
We had a baptizin party on Caney Creek

MUSICAL BREAKDOWN

It's been ten years since a Caney Creek Party
So we broke out the robes and got the thing started
We brought down the fiddles and the guitars too
We had a whole lot of singin' and praisin' to do
The choir started singin' when my cousin went under
And when she came up we sent down another
They went in dirty but they came out clean
Good Lord came to visit us on Caney Creek

We had a baptizin party on Caney Creek
Where it ain' t too shallow and it ain't too deep
Now, so many souls got saved this week
We had a baptizin party on Caney Creek
We had a baptizing party on Caney Creek

I was happy to have this come up. Great song. Just great overall: vocals, arrangemnet, phrasing, lyrics. I really like the opening--really draws you in. IT makes me think and picture the scene...

Very well done...reminds me a bit of "O Brother" stuff....great imagery...."where it ain't too shallow and it ain't too deep" is a great line to come back to....Nice clear vocie and a clean recording. I can see Randy Travis with this one...

Very original idea, great production!
