Song Description

The subject in the song, the love of the narrator's life, is afraid to get close to anyone/anything due to her mother's death at an early age. The narrator tries to convince her to let go and throw caution to the wind, to "let love lead us."

Story Behind the Song

Woke up after a nap with the story in the lyrics in mind and basically took to the guitar and wrote it, or began writing it. This was around 2008, that summer.

Playlists this song is on:

All that she'd remembered
Was her mother's amber tresses
But the photograph revealed
A fondness for those old gingham dresses.
She talks to the photo most every day
But she can never turn back the clock
Wind things back to a time before it was
Much too late.
I try my best to tell her
To take that leap of faith
For there's someone looking down
Who'd want it that way.

It's like her daddy said to her/There's decisions along the way/Decisions to be made
And I say she should just let go/Let love lead her/To some place that might be safe.

Every other day I see her,
will she drive down to the shoreline?
Will she come on back after a while,
insisting everything's fine?
Oh, but she and I, hell, we both know,
there ain't nothing easy,
and she's done come to learn
ain't a damn thing that's free,
ain't nothin' free.
Eventually she may
let herself get close,
until then vulnerability
ain't worth everything she knows.
