A Coming Storm

Story Behind The Song

Someone close to me wrote a poem about a destructive relationship in her life. She reluctantly shared the poem with me. The reluctance was partly due to how vulnerable she felt in sharing the words, and partly because she was handing it to me so I could make a song of it. We had this discussion before about collaboration, and it often resulted in arguing. I was apprehensive about making a song out of someone else's lyric; and, she was apprehensive about someone editing her work. We both wondered if we would appreciate the end result. I awoke at 2am one morning shortly thereafter, unable to sleep. I began working on the song. I changed some of the words, added a few lines of my own, and made music for it. When she awoke the next morning, I played the song for her. She and I were both surprised and pleased with the work. I think the tension between us even helped with the writing, since the song was about intense emotion to begin with.

Song Description

This song is the result of a lifelong relationship with someone who is destructive. The destruction and havoc caused by this person permeate all of one's life - even after seemingly "moving on." Sometimes, there is no such thing as moving on. Sometimes, the memories overwhelm. And, the feeling one gets right before becoming overwhelmed is much like the onset of a storm. One sees the storm coming, but can do nothing except bear down and ride it out. But, before the storm hits, one is simply overwhelmed and frozen with fear.

Lyrics

It's coming,
and calm fades away.
It's coming,
unraveling the shards of my peace.
She is a burning tower,
no hope of salvation,
a ceaseless wind
going astray.

I want to find
a final disaster.
I want release
from her perilous peaks.
I fell through the cracks
into an abyss.
I'm slipping away,
statue alabaster.

It's all I can do, it's all I can do
to stand here frozen
and lost to you.

It's all I can do, it's all I can do
to stand here frozen
and lost to you.

A monument
to a past
not spoken
and lied.

She calls
me to the fire,
beckons
my spirit to hated paths.
She holds me down,
claws at my flesh.
She is a blackbird.
I am her bemired.

It's all I can do, it's all I can do
to stand here frozen
and lost to you.

It's all I can do, it's all I can
to stand here frozen
and lost to you.

A monument
to a past
not spoken
and lied.

What do you want from me?
What did you hear?
Did someone tell you
you'd find it here?

It's all I can do, it's all I can do
to stand here frozen
and lost to you.

It's all I can do, it's all I can
to stand here frozen
and lost to you.

A monument
to a past
not spoken
and lied.

What do you want from me?
What did you hear?
Did someone tell you
you'd find it here?
