Song Description

Using a car, and times when "the seat goes back a little farther," this song portrays young lovers who become parents, and grow old together, still in love as they age.

Story Behind the Song

Taking two lines from Waylon Collins, the singer, Doug Deforest and I fashioned a narrative, making a car the "vehicle" for a lifelong love story.

The Seat Goes Back
W. Collins/D. Deforest/C. Sandage
©2013

It was a '57 ragtop, he could pay it off on time
That Chevrolet was just a way toward what he had in mind
You see, the only thing more beautiful he had ever seen
Was the girl he'd take on moonlight drives with a few stops in between

At a place down by the river, just a little past a mile
The top came down, the stars came out
They both began to smile

And the seat goes back a little farther, farther
Then their lips move in a little closer, closer
Then the ties that bind start growing stronger, stronger
Yes, the memories have just begun when the seat goes back a little farther

It made no sense for a working man to keep a ragtop car
But they couldn't bear to sell it - it had been with them this far
The two of them and that old Chevy made it thru each day
Before too long she told him there was one more on the way

One night at two AM, she said, "it's time," they hurried thru the night
She screamed and said this just won't wait, he said it'll be alright

And the seat goes back a little farther, farther
Then the time is coming closer, closer
And the ties that bind are growing stronger, stronger
And the child they made takes his first breath
As the seat goes back a little farther

With every year that passed you could bet that once or twice
Someone would try to buy that car, they'd say "you can name your price"
Finally it was just too much, real life needs paying for
But no sooner had they cashed that check
Than they were missing that old car

Another twenty years went by, and one day outside of town
A "for sale" sign in a windshield made him stop and turn around
That night, down by the river, like it had only been a while
He dropped that ragtop down, and she began to smile

And the seat goes back a little farther, farther
Then their lips move in a little closer, closer
And the ties that bind were never stronger, stronger
All their memories find their way back home
When the seat goes back a little farther
