Growing Love

Story Behind The Song

More "country folks" are content and positive, not surly and defensive or all-out redneck party animals. I wanted to write about that. These are most of the people I knew growing up where I did.

Song Description

Unlike so many "country folks" portrayed in songs as being wary of outsiders, defensive about their lifestyle, or full-time party animals, this guy works hard on his farm, loves his wife and child, and wants to keep doing what he's doing.

Rusty old tractor in the middle of the hayfield
Haul them bales, throw them into the barn
A day's work on this old farm leads me home back to your arms
If it's hay out in the field or the little one that's showing
Everything we do around here is all about growing

Plant a seed, wait a while, pray for rain - if the good lord smiles
You get to watch it grow beneath the skies above
Tend the crops, tend each other - work like the devil and live like lovers
Growing crops, growing family, growing love

Next year we're gonna take a little more land in
Add on to the house for our little man
See his first steps, watch his Mama cry tears of joy from her blue eyes
Doing what we need to do just to keep this good life going
Everything around this house is all about growing

Plant a seed, wait a while, pray for rain - if the good lord smiles
You get to watch it grow beneath the skies above
Tend the crops, tend each other - work like the devil and live like lovers
Growing crops, growing family, growing love

It'll all be worth it when he grows into a man
Takes hold of everything he's learned, takes some good woman's hand

He'll plant a seed and wait a while, pray for rain - if the good lord smiles
He'll get to watch it grow beneath the skies above
Tend the crops and tend each other - work like the devil and live like lovers
Growing crops, growing family, growing love
