Song Description

It's about following your passion, taking hold of your life on personal, vocational, and other levels, at any age.

Story Behind the Song

I started this lyric and melody at the time I was "retiring" and shifting my focus entirely to songwriting; a new beginning. Thinking about that and other threshold moments in my life led to this song.

Burn On
© Charley Sandage/Doug Deforest
2013

Young and hungry- fire in your eyes
Like a comet bound a million miles across the skies
Somebody says you've got to rein it in
You're burning the candle at both ends

Burn on - it's your time
You've got oceans to cross, you've got mountains to climb
Once you let the embers die, you're gone
Burn on

On one night, that melted into day
You found one heart hearing what your heart has to say
Somebody says you've got to keep it cool
You're playing with fire, like a fool

Burn on - right or wrong
This could be the flame that will last your whole life long
Once you let the embers die, you're gone
Burn on

Sometimes you smolder, sometimes you blaze
But all you lose is ashes - the gold inside you stays
Burn on

Hair of gray now, step's a little slow
But there's love you want to make, miles you want to go
Somebody says you've got to act your age
But your story's far from over - write another page

Burn on - you know how
You never hid your fire before, why would you start now
Once you let the embers die, you're gone
Burn on
Just burn on
