Story Behind The Song
Through the intellectual battle fields of having a socialist, union supporting father turned Christian, I have been brought up to consider many angles of existence and social idealisms. Educated in public day school systems, church, Bible College, University and Technical Colleges as contributed to even further brooding.
Looking in the mirror one day, I thought that it was amazing that I was even aware that I knew there was an 'I." Not a new concept, but a concept I encourage as people try to find their place in the world
Song Description
Self awareness...incomprehensible, even by the most intellgent, which begs the question, How do we know we exist? The answer in the song is indirect and yet obvious. It comes through a chrous which disenchanted with conventional wisdom.

Lyrics
There's this guy,
And he's a genius
He's a genius
But he's depressed
He understands
So much about things
Except for one thing,
And that's his hands
How does he move them
When he wants to
And how does he know
That they're his hands?
When he turns the doorknob
To go in the bathroom
And points in the mirror
At himself
Chorus:
How does he know that what he points at
is the backwards image of himself?
With mathematics and biomechanics
No answer can be found about himself
And he finds it puzzling
This funny feeling
About a sunset
When he's looking west
He can't explain it
Why he looks for beauty
He doesn't understand it
Even at his best
He's so self concious
He's in his body
In a carbon life form
And now he moves his hands.
There's this guy
And he's a genius
He's a genius
But he's depressed.
(Chorus)
(repeat Chorus)
