Circuses and Bread

Story Behind The Song

I was playing with my ding dong and this song came out.

Song Description

The Roman emperors understood that to keep the populace content and subdued, it was only necessary that they be given "bread and circuses". The circuses provided were marvelous spectacles depicting in miniature the struggles of humanity against a cruel, unforgiving world. Today we settle for Barney, Wilma and Fred. In all ages, as the power of the state increases and the people begin to have less and less control over their lives, they begin to turn away, as if forced, from life and toward other-worldly substitutes-- most notably religion or philosophy (or TV and video games). We do so to escape the feeling of powerlessness, but consequently, by rejecting reality we are weakened and begin to shun all forms of struggle. The people, and thus the state, end by being unable to solve even the most basic of problems, both personal and societal. The people no longer have the will to face up to the brutalities of life.

Lyrics

CIRCUSES and BREAD

Flown to philosophy,
Driven to dreaming,
Tracked down by TV,
Our twilight's last gleaming.

Circuses and bread.
Barney, Wilma and Fred.

Your inoculations don't leave a scar.
Come cut me deep to where the feelings are.
To my hollow chest waging nuclear war.
On a countdown explosion--a dying star.

Deaf to George Washington,
Blinded by our setting sun,
Running from ragged outcastes,
George by himself would kick their ass.

Circuses and Bread.
Barney, Wilma and Fred.

Your inoculations don't leave a scar.
Come cut me deep to where the feelings are.
To my hollow chest waging nuclear war.
On a countdown explosion--a dying star.

We've used our guts to bait our hook,
All we can do is now to look,
For danger in a lady's purse,
The bogey man up grandma's skirt.

Circuses and Bread.
Barney, Wilma and Fred.

Your inoculations don't leave a scar.
Come cut me deep to where the feelings are.
To my hollow chest waging nuclear war.
On a countdown explosion--a dying star.
