Carbondale Elementary

Story Behind The Song

Working a one time night job in Aspen Colorado I had the day to myself. I pulled my van into a state park where I started playing my guitar. I didn?t know too many songs them. A bus load of children were on a field trip. I later found out they were there for a biology project. Some kids came up to the van and asked if they could listen. Then more came. They sang along to the songs they knew and listened to the ones they didn?t know. When I was finished they pulled out pencils and paper from their lunch bags and asked me for my autograph. When they drove away they all waved goodbye. They gave me the motivation to start a music career. I wrote this song that same night, 29 years ago!!!!

Lyrics

CARBONDALE ELEMENTARY

Verse

It took a bunch of kids, from Carbondale Elementary School, to get the motivation, to start my career.

Roaring Forks took ?em on a field trip, to study biology, when some politely walked over, to talk to me.

Well I pulled my guitar and I started to play, and they shyly asked me if they could stay, and I looked at them and said its okay.

Then all of a sudden here came more, hanging in and out of my door, but I kept playing, as best as I could.

Bridge

Well, they all sang the songs that they knew and they listened to the ones that they couldn?t do, when I was done they said they really liked me a lot.

Verse

Well, I?ve never seen such a nice bunch of kids, well-mannered, well-mannered, cute little kids, and if you want, you may stay all day.

Well, they went away but they came right back, pulling papers and pencils from their brown lunch sacks, and the little darlin?s asked for my autograph.

And as they drove away in their big yellow bus, just a screaming and a waving and a making a fuss, trying to say goodbye to me from the other side.
