Song Description

A woman remembers her marriage on the beach, and then we learn that her husband was killed in the war. She is walking on the beach today, and finds roses washed up in the sand, here and there for about a mile. They remind her of her wedding and also the memorial service where they scattered his ashes in the sea. Both memories keep him near, as she smiles through her tears.

Story Behind the Song

I was walking on the beach one day and came upon a long stemmed rose washed up on the shore. Another 10 feet there was another, then another. They went on for about a mile. My friend and I started making up stories about where they could have come from --- a wedding, a prom, a first kiss.... and then we came upon the funeral wreath washed up, surrounded by roses.

ROSES IN THE SAND - LYRICS
Carlene Thissen, Barbara Meyers, Martha Christian

Rows of white chairs on a sandy beach
Daddy all dressed up, gave me away
My dress flowed in the ocean breeze
Ribbons and roses in my bouquet

I remember that day - before the war took you away.

CHORUS

Walking today, I find roses on the beach
Someone else's memories washed up at my feet
Reminders that our love will never end
You're with me again.... in roses in the sand.

VERSE 2:

Sailed out at sunset, I was holding on
All heads bowed, the chaplain prayed
They handed me the medals from your uniform
We tossed roses as the bugle played

And I remember that day, flowers floating on the waves

CHORUS
Walking today, I find roses on the beach
Someone else's memories washed up at my feet
Reminders that our love will never end
You're with me again.... in roses in the sand.

BRIDGE:

I see these flowers and smile through my tears
Long-stemmed memories keep you near

CHORUS:
Walking today, I find roses on the beach
Someone else's memories washed up at my feet
Reminders that our love will never end
You're with me again.... in roses in the sand.
