Lyrics
TWO SOUNDS HAUNT ME
Two sounds remind me
I can never make it right.
Two sounds haunt me:
A door closing quietly in the night,
And a train rolling somewhere out of sight.
I came home late, one night?
Much later than I said I?d be.
Now, what could I say?
I thought she might be waiting up for me.
I closed the door very quietly.
I sat down at the table
And drank a glass of whisky.
I thought I?d collect my thoughts,
But my thoughts escaped from me
And left me alone, where no man ought to be.
She walked into the room?
Took one look at me.
She said: ?I know you had your fun,
But, boy, you made a fool out of me,
And, I?m telling you, that?s not the way it?s going to be.?
And then she walked away?
Effortlessly.
At the front door, she turned and said:
?Don?t bother coming after me.?
And, then, she closed the door very quietly.
I went down to the station,
To make my final plea.
The railroad man took one look?.
He said: ?Son, she left on the 4:23.?
I said: ?This?ll be the death of me.?
Two sounds remind me
I can never make it right.
Two sounds haunt me:
A door closing quietly in the night,
And a train rolling somewhere out of sight.
