We Have Been Young

Story Behind The Song

Started with the verse chord sequence on guitar and developed from there.

WE HAVE BEEN YOUNG
Lyrics & Music by Bob Bentley © 2023

Verse 1
Time has crept up on us, it snuck up like a thief.
And stole those years before we were aware
We can never turn the clock back but it's our belief
We have learned much on that journey we can share

Chorus
We have been young, the things that you've done
We did them all before you, don't think we've never knew
We've played those games, been through your pains
The anguish and despair, when no one seems to care
We have all been young

Verse 2
We have walked ahead in your shoes testing out the way
We've trod that path you're travelling along
Dodging slings, the arrows, it was no different in our day
Like you we had that strength to carry on

Chorus
We have been young, the things that you've done
We did them all before you, don't think we never knew
We've played those games, been through your pains
The anguish and despair, when no one seems to care
We have all been young

Bridge
Now we hold our hands out to you, though they may be hard to reach
Generations make us seem so far apart
But we're not here to patronise, we are not here to preach
When you need help, we will have you in our hearts

Chorus
We have been young, the things that you've done
We've done them all before you, don't think we never knew
We've played those games, been through your pains
The anguish and despair, when no one seems to care
We have all been young
We have all been young
We have all been young

God help us, we've all been young...

Hi, Bob. This is very good. Melody is pleasant and has the emotion it intends, and the lyrics fill and compliment the melody very well. It very well could have fit on a Kenny Rogers album as a swan song. The first 36 seconds of guitar notes are beautiful and enchanting. You wisely didn't add any other instruments until the chorus. The message is something that could only be passed on from the old to young, and the words are woven in a lovely way as Graham Nash may have written them.
