Story Behind The Song

First recorded over 20 years ago, this is one of my favorite songs. It was suggested to me many moons ago that the original version was too fast and the emotions would come across better if slower. I have remixed the track and re-recorded the guitar parts to bring this song up to date.

Verse One:
Think you know by now, that we should be moving on
Though we're still the best of friends, the romance has all gone
I've known you long enough to tell, that you're trying to pretend
But you don't want to be the one

Verse Two:
Every day I see that look, I feel it deep inside
We are trying very hard, not to hurt each other's pride
I really think that you deserve, a better life than this
But I don't want to be the one....

Chorus:
To, walk away babe, free as a bird
Time to make a brand new life out in the big wide world
Walk away babe, don't look back
We will still be best of friends, on our different tracks

Verse Three:
No point in putting on this show, when no one really gains
Don't want to be the one to leave, so we go on just the same
It's not that we don't get along, but we are not in love
Time that one of us was strong...

Chorus:
Walk away babe, free as a bird
Time to make a brand new life, out in the big wide world
Walk away babe, don't look back
We can still be best of friends, on our different tracks

Walk away.....

Instrumental break

Verse Four:
We've got to take a chance, on what becomes of us in time
But I wish you all the best, and I'm sure we'll be fine
Heaven knows that you deserve, much more than we have now
But I don't want to be the one...

Chorus:
To walk away babe, free as a bird
Time to make a brand new life, out in the big wide world
Walk away babe, don't look back
We can still be the best of friends, on our different track

Walk away babe, free as a bird
Time to make a brand new life, out in the big wide world
Walk away babe, please don't look back
We can still be the very best of friends, on our different tracks

Walk away.....

Nice tune. The lyrics sound very personal like they were taken from a chapter of someone's life. There were some very tasty guitar lines throughout the song. That is a good sounding Stratocaster. A keeper for sure. I liked the guitar harmony lick at the outro of the song.
Well done!!

Very nice song, and well delivered and the instrumentation is tremendously supportive. I can't imagine that this won't find a home somewhere - good luck.

I don't want to be the one, neither do you...this is one of the best songs that Kenny Rogers never recorded. The story of being stuck yet knowing you must move on is told with rich imagery in a very catchy way with an emotionally charged melody that looks out into the horizon as life must move on. The instrumentation is flawless, starting gently and building up to electric guitars and drums that add to the conviction of the lyrics as a relationship that has lost its passion nears the end.

I'm always impressed with your material. great recording

Love it, Bob. Your songs are a real favorite with me! Love the lyrics and story of this one. bird/big wide world (love that lyric) Mrs. Kate

Some of the vocals don't seem to match up. Love the ending harmonies and outro.

Beautiful, vocals are great and instruments sound perfectly blended and nice and clear. I don't know enough country music to compare the vocal to, but I like it.
Great job!

Excellent all the way around, Bob. Love the opening guitar especially, but the whole song is #1 with a bullet!
