Motel Walls

I
Ursula?s motel room has always been next to mine
and our adjoining wall is as thin as a sheet.
Every night she uses up her free call time
leaving messages on her boyfriend?s machine.
She says, Come out, come out, won?t you honey?
Come out, come out with me.

Most days I?m at home to hear her restlessness
and tonight I hear her over my TV.
I don?t get out, get out too often these days
I don?t go out, go out at all.

But I go to room four and knock on her door
And she says she?s seen me around before
Do you wanna leave and have a drink with me?
She says she?d like to leave and have a drink with me
That?s how we meet each other?s end.

II
Ursula picks this bar that?s dark as a smoker?s lung
She tells me how she likes it ?cause it?s cheap
She says, Come on, tell me about yourself.
Come on, spell it out for me.

So the bar gets empty, I tell her I?m lonely
and Ursula listens and nods her empathy
I say, I thought I?d be someone by now
Now I?m so disappointed.

And we drink so much it seems okay to touch
But after we kiss she calls herself a bitch.
She puts her shoes back on and begins to run
And from the bar window I watch her go
And I know she?s not coming back.

III
When I get back to my room I hear Ursula crying
And a beat-up Ram is parked outside in the mist.
I hear, Get up! Shut up and tell me
Who the fuck you?ve been drinking with.

A few hours later there is screaming and slamming
And a booming voice comes banging at my door.
It says, Come out, come out, I know you?re in there!
Come out, I?m gonna rip off your motherfucking jaw!

When I don?t reply he says I?m gonna die
And there?s a sickening pause ?fore he comes through the wall
He knocks me to my knees and I start to bleed
He kicks me in the head until my eyes turn red
Though I can?t feel my feet and I cannot breathe
Ursula don?t help, she?s frightened for herself
But it don?t seem fair what I have to bear
Just ?cause we shared a motel wall.
