here is a wreckage on a dark ocean bed
where pearls hide in soft oyster flesh
and salt-rusted anchors lay buried in sand
tethered to ghost-ships and oil
from stalled expeditions with tentative plans
to reset its bones on the land

so why can't you haul me into your arms
like I am something to be raised
and why can't you draw me, slowly lift me
like I am something to be saved

here is a diving bell caught in the wake
of passenger liners gone by
where swimmers tread water for pockets of air
and blink their eyes into the tide
while those on the surface sit calmly and still
counting the tugs on the rope

when I am caught up in the waves

like I am something to be saved
