Playing the Fool (Instrumental)

Story Behind The Song

One of my close relatives is affected by schizophrenia. This song is my impression of what is going on in his heart and mind, based on my observations of his interactions with me an others around him over the course of my long relationship with him.

Song Description

This passionate arrangement of a folk style ballad features acoustic steel-string guitar, voice-over dirty flute and synthesizer. The piece opens with the guitar picking a poignant theme as a pair of gentle flutes underscores the harmony. Then the guitar moves to rhythm as one of the flutes states the melody. A synth bass enters at the chorus, driving the rhythm harder before a tenor saxophone grabs the lead at the bridge. A dirty voice-over flute appears, as drums enter at the solo section. Repeats of the melody occur featuring a zappy synth, then the piece closes hauntingly with lovely harmonies created by the flutes and saxophone. The emotive content is one of sadness, but projected in a warm, elegant way.
