Goodbye MaryJane (Instrumental)

Story Behind The Song

I watched someone close to me struggle for years with an addiction to marijuana, and was delighted when he finally kicked the habit. This song is about his early days of recovery and the thoughts that kept his body pure. I love metaphors and allegories, so I constructed the story to apply to both a person and a poison. The melody of this piece is strong enough to warrant an instrumental version.

Song Description

This bouncy bluegrass tune opens with 2 flutes over a bed of banjo, acoustic steel string rhythm guitar, acoustic bass and brush drum kit. The melody begins at the 9th bar played first on acoustic guitar, and then on the flute. Guitar and flute solos are bracketed by a contrasting bridge, before the melody returns, then a variation of the introduction caps off the tune in an upbeat mood.
