Song Description

At first impression, this song is about a man?s recovery from a toxic relationship. However, on another level the double entendre is also a metaphor for triumph over toxic substance abuse.

Story Behind the Song

I watched someone close to me struggle for years with an addiction to marijuana, and was delighted when he finally kicked the habit. This song is about his early days of recovery and the thoughts that kept his body pure. I love metaphors and allegories, so I constructed the story to apply to both a person and a poison.

Goodbye Mary-Jane
Verse 1
It?s hard for me to say goodbye to you Mary-Jane
After so much time together through the years.
But you?re half a day of sunshine followed by a week of rain
When our laughter has given way to tears.

O Mary-Jane, O Mary-Jane,
O Mary-Jane, Goodbye Mary-Jane

Verse 2
I dreamed of you again last night and thought of you today.
I want to get you out of my mind.
I know that time will take away the memory of you
But I wish I?d never thought that you were mine.

Mary-Jane, I loved you but it?s over now I?ve left you
And I?m feeling better as the days go by.
Mary-Jane, you took too much, you left me feeling out of touch,
You weren?t a friend on whom I could rely.

Verse 3
I sometimes wish that we could be together once again
When I think about the way you made me feel.
Then I remember how you let me down so many times,
I need someone whose love for me is real.
