Song Description

The song begins with an upbeat drum intro, followed by a funk-inspired bass line, gradually adding a dirty Rhodes sound for a vintage feel. A distorted rock guitar enters in the mix on the second verse and the Hammond organ on the second chorus. The breakdown at the end repeats the text "Mockingbird, who's laughing now?" in Andrew's Sisters-inspired harmony.

Story Behind the Song

The writer is sitting alone in her new home among the mess of boxes just after moving out after a breakup. She's happy to be out of the relationship and on her own as he wasn't a very nice guy.

Lyrics

Sitting in this empty room hands over my chair
Crying out for someone who was never really there
Talkers talk of broken things,
I wished for diamond rings
But I all want just comes down to the simplest of things

Chorus:
You can laugh, but I won't cry
You can hit me, but I won't die
Now these ashes lie just where you stood
Just ask my little Mockingbird
She sings, Mockingbird knows
And she tells me just where to go
My little bird talks of Mockingbird things
But my heart won't stick around, take back your Mockingbird of rings.

Laughing at this pretty face, boxes on the floor
Why did I not see that little Mockingbird at my door
Talkers talk of broken things, I wished for diamond rings
But all you wanted just comes down to the vilest thing with wings

[Chorus]

Mockingbird who's laughing now?
