Wow, you knocked this one right out of the park! What an important song to write, to perform, and it needs to be HEARD. I kept thinking of a son of one of my friends who has gotten in trouble with the law. You did such a great job writing the lyrics. The stories were so real and presented so clearly. The production is simple and perfect for a song like this. The gentle female harmony added a lot to the choruses. Hook is memorable. I think I will send it my friend, but it will probably make her cry.

Lyrics

FATHERLESS BOY
Susan Witzel & Adam Avery

He's at the bar -another round of whiskey
Unemployed again- Cut backs at the mill
He wonders how- some get by so easy
'Cause it's hard to make a buck when you don't have that many skills

And he thinks back to the day his daddy left
And he wonders if the man he'd loved had but one regret
'Cause twenty years of drinking never helped him to forget
He thinks back to the day his daddy left

He was a FATHERLESS BOY the one at school
With the busted up shoes and matted hair
He was a FATHERLESS BOY hard to be cool
When you hear their whispers and feel them stare
That's what you learn to accept, left behind like a broken toy
A FATHERLESS BOY

Two states away- a boy steps to the plate and
Swings with all his might- cheers rise from the crowd
Two shifts today- so his mama's late and
As he rounds third base- he wonders- if his Daddy would be proud

Then he thinks back to the day his Daddy left
And he wonders if the man he loved still has one regret
'Cause seven months without him hasn't helped him to forget
He thinks back to the day his Daddy left

He was a FATHERLESS BOY the one at school
With the busted up shoes and matted hair
He was a FATHERLESS BOY hard to be cool
When you hear their whispers and feel them stare
That's what you learn to accept, left behind like a broken toy
A FATHERLESS BOY

Bridge:
Tenderly the man unfolds a picture
The barmaid smiles when he tells her "That's my son"
But does he see the irony of his GREATEST failure-
Or if he only turned around -he might have won?

Now his FATHERLESS BOY- is the one at school
With the busted up shoes and nappy hair-
His sweet FATHERLESS BOY's trying to be cool
Ignoring all their whispers and painful stares
It's been so long since he's felt joy...

Cause he's a...
FATHERLESS BOY the one at school
With the busted up shoes and matted hair
He is a FATHERLESS BOY hard to be cool
When you hear all their whispers and see them stare
That's what you learn to EXPECT, left behind like a broken toy
A FATHERLESS BOY...
