Goat

Story Behind The Song

I just wanted to write a note about a piece we have recently finished called 'goat'. The name doesnt mean anything, I dont think.... 'Goat' came about after working it out in my head for a considerable amount of time. I wanted to think and write from a different angle completely. I wanted it to be something 'you' wouldnt think was me or us. When I figured out what I wanted, I started with a plastic flute type device and went from there. I knew I wanted a 'funky' rhythm gitar but didnt know how to get it. Chris nailed it. Sometimes it takes a bit of work to actually record a work. We are all used to working alone because music is a solitary thing to start with. We may want to work with others but you have to start alone. And so you are used to playing a song, not recording a track. in tracking you must play the exact same thing repeatedly for a rhythm. While doing so, we want to take off and do a solo and the desire is sometimes overwhelming. It is particularly difficult on percussion. It may seem like 'drummers' are always playing the same thing over and over but they are not. They are 'comping' along with everyone else. So to play something like a machine is the reverse of what comes naturally. The percussion on 'Goat' was recorded separately on individual tracks to create 'movement'. It was alot of work for all involved but more than work it was fun. I want to thank everyone who worked on 'Goat' and made it as much fun as it was.
