Lyrics
It was a night like any other; we'd already trimmed the tree,
And my favorite Christmas ornament was smiling back at me.
Her white gown was made of porcelain, so was her golden hair.
Silver wings were meant for flyin.' Still she remained hanging
While the house was fast asleep
I thought I heard her call to me....
When I woke my eyes were burning, and I kept hearing my name,
As I ran through every room to save the living from the flame.
We all gathered on the sidewalk as the firemen rushed inside.
And I thought about the angel, the voice that was calling...
Gone, my childhood souvenirs
Along with holding back my tears.
She led me through smoke and she led me through fire.
I followed like I heard an old-time gospel choir.
Those firemen did their best, but we lost most all our things.
Then one handed me my angel
With her scorched and dirty wings.
I'll never know how she survived it, when the tree had burned to ash.
It's beyond the mortal realm how such a thing could come to pass.
So I've kept that angel with me through the hard times in my life.
And I thank her every Christmas that I'm still standing
Through the changes that I've seen.
Ooooh, I still can hear her sing.
She leads me through smoke and she leads me through fire.
I follow like I hear an old-time gospel choir.
And every day I'm grateful for the comfort that she brings.
Oooh, oooh, oooh, my angel...
Angel with dirty wings.
