Because You've Taught Me

Story Behind The Song

This song came through me as I was driving down the highay, thinking about which song to sing for a Hospice Memorial service. My 26 year old niece had died recently and I was thinking of her, my mother and grandmother when the chorus just burst forth from me, "Because You've Taught Me, Love can Never Die," and over the next few days I came up with the verses. This music came "through" just as the music for the 11 lullabies, no warning, just suddenly hearing music in my head.

Lyrics

Many the days, I longed to see your face
So many times, I've felt you in my space
So many times, I miss you so
But I know your world is better
In the beautiful, far place where you are

Oh how I treasure all my memories of you
I remember your laughter, and I see your courage too
You were so brave, and stronger than we knew
But I couldn't bear the thought of
The day when you would gently slip away

But you have taught me
Love can never die
Because yo've taught me
How quickly time can fly
Because you've taught me
There's strength in letting go
To surrender to God's plan
In time, we will understand

You taught me the meaning of faith in things unseen
Lessons of life, and all that they mean
From this I've grown strong, and I've learned acceptance too
All this I learned from you
You shared with me your wisdom and your love

We'll be together, in another place and time
A place where there's peace, a peace that's so sublime
And there we'll reflect, on all that has gone by
There'll be no need to try
To understand the mysteries of life

Because you've taught me
Love can never die
Because you've taught me
Each day I must try
Because you've taught me
There's strength in letting go
To surrender to God's plan
In time we'll understand
