Song Description

Three's not company when it comes to marriage and sometimes it comes down to breaking a promise or breaking hearts.

Story Behind the Song

The phrase "break two hearts to keep from breaking one" appeared in my psyche. It led me to imagine what it must be like to be part of a union you thought was "the one" only to discover that the true love of your life was waiting around the corner. But, to some, the promise of "'til death do we part" is one that trumps over all others, even if it means breaking two hearts to honor it.

V1: He doesn't know anything about us
He doesn't suspect the bond we share
To be completely honest
I'm not sure how we got there

I took a vow never to hurt him
And I'm honoring it still
The hurt is there - he just doesn't know it
I'm gonna make sure he never will

Cho: I'm willing to break two hearts to keep from breaking one
I can't take it back - what's done is done
At the end of the day, all I can say
Is some things are better left unsaid
I can't break his heart so I'll break ours instead

V2: I promised to be true
And I was till I met you
If we continue there's no doubt
He's gonna find us out

My heart is yours and yours is mine
But now we have to draw the line
Letting go of you
Is the hardest thing I'll ever do

Bridge: If you love me like you say you do
Help me find a way to stay away from you
I'm asking you to promise me
You'll set me free

V3: Maybe if he knew
He'd want me to be with you
But I guess we'll never know
'Cause I can't leave him....so

Tag: I can't break his heart
