Pillow Talk

Story Behind The Song

Scott sent his brother Shaun a fun, upbeat lyric called "If This Old Pillow Could Talk" which would have made a great song but for whatever reason, the words "Pillow Talk" jumped out and inspired Shaun. He thought it would be interesting to twist the conventional meaning of "pillow talk" and not make it naughty but instead heartbreaking. In his Nashville studio, he took Scott's saddest verses, wrote a chorus, bridge, chords and melody and emailed it back to his brother in Seattle hoping that he wouldn't hate the new direction. Luckily, Scott found it moving and over the next 2 days and the miracle of FaceTime the two brothers tweaked and fine-tuned this song. They hope it will move anyone who has ever gone through a devastating loss.

Song Description

Sad song that could be sung by a male or a female. A bait and switch title- the hope is that the listener expects to hear a naughty song about lover's whispers but they quickly discover that this is 180 degrees in the opposite direction. The singer has lost the love of his life and is left with nothing but a pillow and memories - neither of which he is ready to let go of. The song intentionally speaks to a wide range of heartbreaking loss. Be that a breakup, a divorce, loss of a child, etc. The listener is free to interpret it in a personalized way as all of us have experienced a devastating loss at some point.

Lyrics

V1
Still stained with your tears, crushed by your fears
From all the restless nights...Babe
If it held all your dreams, it would burst at the seams
And break with the morning light....Babe

PC1
But the covers don't cover it up now
And I can't seem to give you up now that I can hear your pillow talk

CH
Yeah, it speaks to me and together we remember how it used to be
If this is all I have to hold onto
I just can't let it slip loose, I'd rather be with you
But now I'm not and all I've got are sleepless nights and pillow talk

V2
And God how we used to laugh, I cling to the photograph
That I can't leave behind the frame... Babe
I can still smell your hair like I did when you were there
No, time won't wash it away... Babe

PC2
And the covers won't cover it up now
And I can't seem to give it up now 'cause I can hear this pillow talk

CH

BR
And the thoughts of where you lay your head tonight
That me and this old pillow fight
I can't let them slip away, I can not let them leave this place
Not with the memories stuffed in this pillow case

CH
