Story Behind The Song
I wanted to write a contemporary jazz song that would include classical elements to merge the two genres. I wanted to put this on the Reflections CD with Tom Stryker and Dewey Dorough but didn't finish it in time. An Italian jazz pianist named Luca Ridolfo contacted me to transcribe a couple of jazz pieces and so we barter and he and his friends recorded this song and sent me the raw files where Recording Engineer Dan Lewis and I mixed it in Dan's studio.
Song Description
Classy jazz was written with a fast 6 4 with a two beat waltz feel. It has a short 4 bar piano intro followed by the melody played by piano, then clarinet, then bass clarinet. It then goes into a chorus. Then, the beat changes to a 4 4 swing tempo at the same speed and the instruments take turns improvising on the three verses. Then, the chorus reappears followed by the main melody. Then, the beat changes back into the 6 4 key signature, the melody repeats a couple of times then the song ends. The piece overall is a contemporary sounding modern jazz piece.
