Song Description

Childhood friends. Got in touch later in life. They get together, but it doesn't last. She sends him a "Dear John" text. Notwithstanding that, he hopes they are not done.

Story Behind the Song

No back story. Just pure craft. Went to a high-school reunion. Was thinking about such a scenario and that a "Dear John" letter now would come in the form of a text. Fairly impersonal....

A declaration of love from the ghost of childhood past
Fading now into the blue as reality finds its path
Living without you; it's so unreal what life can bring
Movin' on just does not mean a thing

Desire runs through me still as lightning strikes my soul
All I can think of now is "where did you go?"
Lovers of like mind, two of a kind for all time
But by text you declined

I got the "Dear John" text you sent to my phone
Gone -- love, lover, friend -- by touching "send" you said goodbye
And, yes, I took the high road, let you go, but my soul moaned
If only the text was a dream, no need to wonder why

In the still of the night, you cruise through my veins
This burning desire is such a terrible pain
No way I can describe the hurt I feel inside
When love goes wrong, there's just nowhere to hide

Please tell me the text was a dream and you'll be here tonight
