The song was written for/to a troubled adult lover who was searching for peace and spiritual solace/acceptance of difficult circumstances. It seeks to express the fundamental truth that true love allows a person to be free, yet safe to return to the presence and comfort of a constant and faithful friend.

Although adhering to the traditional lullaby structure and genre,(ostinato, repetition,rhythmic lilt etc.), the song also addresses broad themes of love, peace, fidelity, freedom, acceptance, hope and the 'spiritual quest' as well as the obvious sleep. Lyrics can be interpreted as being addressed to an adult lover (which was the original intention) or one's self, as well as to the baby/child audience of a traditional lullaby.
