Good Morning Phoenix

Story Behind The Song

From the writer: I started writing this song almost twenty years ago, and only finished it in 2004. I wanted to write a light jazz, smooth pop syle of song that tells the story of lost love from a man's viewpoint, vulnerable and longing for new love.

Song Description

A man, driving south on I-17 just outside of Phoenix, Arizona, watches a sunrise and is flooded with memories of a lost love. He calls on his Phoenix, his hometown, to help him live and love again.

Lyrics

1.
I looked over my left shoulder
Watched the dawn put out the stars.
Soon the sun would be up, and start burning 'cross the sky.
I - seventeen southbound was lonely
And the sign said Phoenix 29 miles
And, like a flood, old mem'ries started . . . pouring through my mind.

Chorus
Good morning, Phoenix, how are you,
What will you hold for me today?
Oh, you're a contsant reminder
Of the love that went away.
You know I'm happy to see you,
But my heart still holds the pain.
Good morning, Phoenix, how are you?
Help me live and love again.

2.
I remember the last time I held her
On a hot summer night in July;
She was soft and sweet . . . and I was moving way too fast.
Then, while I was sleeping, she left me
And I've always wondered how
She could take my heart and hide it somewhere in the past.
To Chorus

Bridge
I never meant to move away, but I just couldn't stay.
But, now that I've come home . . . I just don't want to be alone.
Oh, help me learn to love again.
To Chorus
